Fall Enrollment Now Open

The Mighty Oaks explored the meaning and traditions behind the Ten Commandments by engaging in a hands-on art and discussion project. Children learned about the significance of rules in their homes and classroom environments, inspired by the story of the Ten Commandments, and had the chance to create and share their own “rules” through both art and conversation.

Learning Focus

  • Understanding the concept of rules and why they exist
  • Recognizing traditions and the importance of guidance from home, school, and faith
  • Developing fine motor skills through decorating activities
  • Practicing listening and verbal communication by discussing personal and classroom rules

Preschool-aged children are beginning to grasp the importance of structure and routine in their lives. By connecting the Ten Commandments to their everyday experiences, this project helps them see rules as tools for fairness, safety, and kindness. Activities like these foster respect for guidelines and empower children to voice their own values and ideas.

Student Engagement

The Mighty Oaks were highly energized by this unique, hands-on project. They eagerly used art supplies to personalize their paper tablets and responded enthusiastically to the invitation to share rules from their home and classroom. The opportunity to combine art with meaningful conversation helped sustain their attention and encouraged them to think deeply about why rules matter. Their excitement was evident as they crafted and discussed their own rules, making the activity both fun and memorable.

Teacher Reflection

One key insight from this lesson: it’s vital to be prepared to jot down the children’s words quickly, as their ideas and reflections come fast during discussion. Having materials ready to document each child’s contribution ensured that everyone’s voice was heard. The project proved to be a powerful way to blend creative expression with moral learning, further reinforcing both community values and individual perspectives.
