Discover how a play-based, child-centered approach lays the foundation for lifelong learning and growth.

At Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, our Early Childhood Education program is built around the belief that play is not just fun—it’s fundamental. Through a carefully designed, play-based curriculum, we nurture the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. But why is play so powerful in the early years, and how does it support lasting growth?

What Is Play-Based, Child-Centered Learning?

Play-based learning means children engage in activities that are joyful, spontaneous, and deeply meaningful to them. Rather than a rigid academic model, our classrooms are designed to let children explore, create, and discover at their own pace. Educators provide structure, guidance, and rich materials, but the child leads the experience.

This child-centered philosophy honors each child’s natural curiosity and supports developmental milestones in a way that feels organic, engaging, and empowering. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), play-based environments foster deeper understanding, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth that traditional instruction often cannot match (NAEYC, 2017).

The Cognitive Benefits of Play

When children play, they are actively problem-solving, experimenting, and making sense of the world around them. Whether they’re building a tower of blocks, mixing colors at the art easel, or acting out a story in the dramatic play corner, they are developing key cognitive skills like:

  • Logical thinking and reasoning
  • Early math and science concepts
  • Language development and storytelling
  • Memory and attention span

The LEGO Foundation’s global research supports that learning through play not only leads to academic readiness but also deeper knowledge retention and critical thinking (LEGO Foundation, 2018).

Social and Emotional Growth Through Play

Play is a social act. In our Beverly Hills preschool classrooms and outdoor spaces, children learn how to take turns, negotiate, empathize, and express themselves. Group activities like circle time, collaborative art, and music help children:

  • Build self-confidence
  • Practice communication and cooperation
  • Understand and manage emotions
  • Cultivate empathy and respect for others

The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that play promotes resilience, helps children cope with stress, and enhances emotional regulation—crucial skills for long-term well-being (Yogman et al., 2018).

Supporting Motor Skills and Physical Development

Fine and gross motor development is another key area supported by play. Activities like:

  • Puzzles and playdough strengthen fine motor control
  • Running, climbing, and tricycle riding develop gross motor coordination
  • Sand and water play refine sensory integration

Children need time and space to move their bodies and engage with tactile materials—and our play-based curriculum ensures they get plenty of both.

Creativity and Critical Thinking

Creativity blossoms in an environment where children feel safe to take risks and try new ideas. Whether it’s mixing ingredients during cooking, inventing a character during dramatic play, or exploring sound during music time, our students learn to think flexibly and independently.

Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child emphasizes that interactive, imaginative play strengthens the brain’s architecture and helps children become capable learners and problem-solvers (Harvard, 2023).

A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

When children enjoy learning, they become lifelong learners. Play-based education instills a sense of wonder, a love of discovery, and the intrinsic motivation to explore. At Temple Emanuel’s Early Childhood Education program, we give children the tools to thrive in school and in life—through play.
