Fall Enrollment Now Open

Rosh Hashanah is a time for new beginnings, family traditions, and meaningful activities that celebrate the Jewish New Year. At the ECC, our students enjoyed a hands-on craft where they created wooden apples decorated with vibrant colors and textures. This fun and simple project not only celebrated the holiday but also boosted important developmental skills.

Learning Focus

The highlight of the activity was watching students proudly design their own rainbow-colored wooden apples, each one a unique expression of creativity. This craft took just 20 minutes to complete and supported children’s early development in several key ways:

  • Strengthening fine motor and eye-hand coordination
  • Encouraging creativity and self-discovery
  • Introducing comparisons of colors and textures
  • Building excitement for Rosh Hashanah traditions
  • Apples dipped in honey are a traditional symbol of wishing for a sweet new year.
  • Creating wooden apples connects children to holiday traditions in a hands-on, memorable way.
  • The project provides an opportunity to talk about values of renewal, sweetness, and hope for the year ahead.
  • Children learn that crafts can represent meaningful traditions while also expressing creativity.

Through this activity, students explored the deeper meaning of apples during Rosh Hashanah. By making their own colorful wooden apples, they not only celebrated the Jewish New Year but also connected with symbols of sweetness, renewal, and hope in a way that felt joyful and personal.

Teacher Reflection

This project was quick and easy to set up, making it a wonderful addition to our classroom schedule. Since it could be completed within a morning or afternoon, it allowed the children to stay focused and fully enjoy the process from start to finish. The best part was that the apples were ready to take home the very same day, which added to the children’s excitement and gave families an immediate opportunity to share in their child’s learning and creativity.
