Passover is a time for reflection, remembrance, and retelling the powerful story of the Exodus. This year, to bring the story to life for my little ones in Group 4, we decided to create a hands-on craft: Baby Moses in the River Nile. It was a wonderful way to engage them with the story and spark meaningful conversations.
We dedicated about 30 minutes to this project, and it was amazing to see how quickly their imaginations took over. Here’s how we brought the story to life:
Materials We Used
- A small Styrofoam basket (representing the papyrus basket)
- A small plastic baby doll (our baby Moses)
- Cardboard for the base (representing the Nile riverbank)
- Blue and green paint
- Artificial moss
- Glue
- Felt fabric for baby Moses’ blanket

Our Creative Process
- 1, Painting the Nile: We started by painting the cardboard base a vibrant blue, representing the mighty Nile River. We added swirls of darker and lighter blues to give it a realistic, flowing look.
- 2. Building the Basket: We carefully glued the Styrofoam basket onto the painted base, positioning it as if it were floating on the river.
- 3. Mossy Banks: To create the lush riverbanks, we glued artificial moss around the basket, adding a touch of greenery to the scene.
- 4. Baby Moses’ Bed: We wrapped the plastic baby in a small piece of felt, creating a cozy little blanket for him. Then, we gently placed baby Moses into his basket.
The kids were absolutely thrilled with their creations! They loved adding the moss and carefully placing “baby Moses” into his basket. It was heartwarming to see their excitement and creativity blossom.

Learning Through Play
Before we started the craft, we spent time reading several children’s books about the story of Moses. This helped them understand the context and significance of the craft. It was also a good way to reinforce the story of how Moses was saved by his mother, and found by Pharaoh’s daughter.
This simple craft turned out to be a fantastic learning experience. It allowed us to:
- Visually represent a key part of the Passover story.
- Engage the children’s senses through tactile play.
- Encourage their creativity and imagination.
- Create a memorable keepsake from our Passover preparations.
Seeing my children’s faces light up as they held their little “Baby Moses” was truly special. It’s a reminder that even simple crafts can create lasting memories and deepen our understanding of important stories.
I hope this inspires you to try your own Baby Moses craft during your Passover preparations. It’s a wonderful way to bring the story to life for your little ones and create cherished memories.
