Outrageous Ostriches

Outrageous Ostrich art from Group 4 Los Angeles preschool classroom and art projects

At Temple Emanuel Early Childhood Center, we believe that preschool is a time for creative learning and hands-on exploration. This week, we are learning about the letter “O.” One of our recent art activities, Outrageous Ostriches, was a perfect blend of discovery, creativity, and self-expression through mixed media and collage for our Group 4 class.

Exploring Ostriches Through Art

Before jumping into the creative process, the children engaged in active learning by reading books, watching videos, and discussing interesting facts about ostriches. This helped build their curiosity and excitement, giving them a foundation of knowledge before they started their art project.

A Hands-On, Open-Ended Activity

Instead of following step-by-step instructions, the children were given a variety of materials—including paper, sticks, clay, glue, feathers, buttons, yarn, foam shapes, and cotton balls—to create their own unique ostrich representations. By allowing them to explore different textures and materials, they developed fine motor skills and creative problem-solving abilities in a fun and engaging way.

The Joy of Creative Expression

Each child approached the project differently, reflecting their unique perspectives and ideas. Some focused on adding long legs using sticks, while others experimented with layering textures to replicate the ostrich’s feathers. Their excitement and engagement highlighted the power of child-led creative learning in a preschool environment.

Encouraging Discovery Through Art

To make the most of this activity, we recommend immersing children in the subject before starting the art project. Reading books, sharing fun facts, and watching short educational videos can inspire their creativity and deepen their understanding of the topic.

Through creative learning experiences like this, preschoolers develop confidence, curiosity, and a love for exploration. Stay tuned for more hands-on learning activities at Temple Emanuel ECC!
