This week in Group 1, the air was filled with creativity and the sweet scent of… well, imagined jam! We dove into the fascinating origins of Purim, and what better way to learn about a holiday than through a hands-on, delicious-looking craft? Our little artists created their very own paper plate Hamantaschen, a traditional Purim cookie, bringing a touch of festive fun to our classroom.
Our focus was on learning about this unique triangular treat and the story behind it. We aimed to not only educate the children about Purim but also to engage their artistic skills and fine motor development.

Our Recipe for Fun

To create these delightful paper plate Hamantaschen, we gathered a few simple supplies:
- Paper plates
- Brown paint
- Staplers
- Colored tissue paper
The Creative Process

- Painting the “Dough”: First, the children enthusiastically painted their paper plates with brown paint, transforming them into the perfect “cookie dough.”
- Folding and Shaping: Once the paint was dry, the teachers carefully folded the paper plates into triangles, the iconic shape of Hamantaschen, and secured them with staples.
- Filling with “Jam”: The children then chose their favorite colors of tissue paper to represent the sweet jam filling, stuffing it inside their triangular creations.
- A Lesson in History: While crafting, we discussed the story of Purim, explaining the significance of the Hamantaschen and its connection to the holiday.
The children had a fantastic time bringing their Hamantaschen to life, and the classroom was buzzing with excitement. It was wonderful to see their imaginations soar as they learned about this special tradition.

A Safety Tip
Remember, when using staples with young children, it’s always a good idea to cover the back of the staples with masking tape to prevent any accidental scratches. Safety first!
This project was a wonderful way to introduce the children to the traditions of Purim, combining learning with fun and creativity. It’s truly heartwarming to see how arts and crafts can bring history to life for our little learners. We look forward to more exciting adventures and delicious-looking creations in Group 1!
